VMWare Player – The network bridge on device VMNet0 is not running after upgrade to windows 8.1

When I upgraded my windows 8 installation to windows 8.1 using the free upgrade through the windows app store I got a strange error when opening VMWare player:

The network bridge on device VMNet0 is not running. The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or the other machines on your network.
Failed to connect virtual device

After some troubleshooting with the network adapters in VMWare Player I decided to reinstall. This fixed the problem, it turns out something happens to the virtual network adapter for VMWare after the upgrade to windows 8.1.

So if you get this error after the upgrade just re-install VMWare Player. All of your virtual machines will remain in tact and you will not have to do anything else.

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I had just moved my Win7 machine to Win10 and the exact same thing happened. The reinstall fixed it.

  • The alternative is to go to the network connections in control panel, select the VMWare network adapter
and click the “install” button to add a new service to that adapter. In the list you’ll see VMWare and the Bridge Service.

After installing that, you won’t even have to restart your running VM, it’ll just work.
