When this happens your screen will suddenly go black and then come back to normal and then you get a error message down the bottom of the screen saying:

Display driver stopped responding and has been recovered.

To make sure this is the correct event check the event viewer and look for the below event.

How to fix Display driver igfx stopped responding error

To fix this issue open the device manager and expand the display drivers section
device manager driver

Right click on the display driver and select update driver software, this will now pop up with the driver updater.

Update driver

Once the installation is finished you will get the below message, then reboot your computer and it should be fixed.

  • Did that, and (Windows 10 home) gives me “The best driver software for your device is already installed – Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date”
    Went back to the ASUS website for my model of laptop (N550JV) and Intel graphics device driver was from 2013
    Tried to install the Generic Intel Graphic drivers for HD4600 and this gives me “The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer”
    In the meantime, the issue has gone from occurring every 2 days to every hour to every 5 minutes. With some pretty bad screen tearing.
    Where to now?
    Thinking that this is perhaps a hardware fault instead?
